Hypotension Study: Data Sheet, Study Flow, FAQs

Overview: A study designed to determine if using a special oxygen face mask will help elevate blood pressure in hypotensive patients

Study Endpoints: 1. Baseline blood pressure.  2. Blood pressure (Q 2 minutes) with the mask on.             3. Heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse ox

Eligible Patients: 18 or older, systolic BP < 95 due to either blood loss, sepsis or dehydration; conscious and mentally competent, not pregnant, no complaints of chest pain or shortness of breath, no heart attack or stroke in the past 3 months, no hx of congestive heart failure    STAB patients are eligible!!!

Study Design: Prospective, observational trial

Anticipated Benefits: Mask may elevate blood pressure

Potential Risks: Patient may have difficulty breathing with mask on, or may feel claustrophobic

Research Associate’s Role: The RA is responsible for identifying potential patients and notifying the PMP if the patient is eligible. The RA will help the PMP consent the patient and keep track of patient's blood pressure before, during, and after mask is put on patient. Before the mask is placed on the patient, the RA will ask the patient a short set of basic questions to assure mental competence. Remember to sign the data collection form on the last page!!

Physician’s Role: The RA will notify physician if any potential hypotensive patients are eligible. You will be asked to help consent and place the mask on the patient (or give the RA permission to do so). The RA will keep track of the patient's blood pressure and will notify you of any significant changes in BP.

Location of Study Packets: Stab Room in bay 1; extra masks are located in the media room against the back wall.
