StO2 Study (Stab Room): PLEASE READ DIRECTIONS BEFORE ENROLLING PATIENT

Overview: A study designed to determine if there is significance between certain events occurring for patients in shock, StO2 (tissue oxygenation) and End-Tidal CO2 levels. These studies will be conducted on stab. room patients.

******Before enrolling patients, please make sure:*******

      1) Patient has a blood pressure of < 95 at sometime since coming into the stab. room
                       AND/OR
      2) Patient has a "shock index" of > .9
**Shock index means pulse/systolic bp   (ex. pulse of 95 and bp of 100/60 WOULD QUALIFY)**

      3) You have checked with physician (attending or pit boss) and they have agreed to draw both:
Lactate and VBG labs and conduct a cardiac ultrasound

Study Endpoints: StO2 levels as measured by the tissue oxygen monitor; ETCO2 levels as measured by the end-tidal monitors which are built into each bed-side monitor in the Stab room. Also, blood pressure, pulse, RR, pulse ox levels, and treatments administered:

1) IV fluids given
2) Meds given
3) Labs drawn (need to have lactate and VBGs in order to qualify)
4) Oxygen given
5) Ultrasound (FAST exam) - needs to be done in order to qualify

NOTE*** Please see instructions posted in media room for full description of study protocol

Eligible Patients: Any patient in the Stab Room with a blood pressure of < 95 at sometime since coming into the stab. room AND/OR a "shock index" of > .9 (see above for details). Consent is preferred but not necessary to collect data. Please try to consent patient in stab. room if they are alert and oriented.

Study Design: Prospective, observational trial

Anticipated Benefits: None

Potential Risks: None

Research Associate’s Role: Identify and (if possible) consent potential patients.  Obtain StO2 and End Tidal levels with tissue oxygenation (located in media room) and ETCO2 monitors (located in stab. room). Use the end-tidal machine which is built into the bed-site monitors.

Physician’s Role: The RA will ask you to notify them of any eligible patients. Physician will also draw lactate and VBG labs, and conduct a cardiac ultrasound.

Location of Study Packets: In top drawer of StO2 monitor cart (media room)
