Patient Recall of Emergency Department Intubation and BIS Monitoring
Miner, Biros, et al.

Overview: This study sought to determine if BIS Monitoring could be used to predict whether or not a patient would recall the experience of being intubated in the Emergency Department.

Primary Endpoints: 1. BIS scores achieved during intubation 2. Patient recall as assessed by VAS at post-extubation follow-up.

Eligible Patients: Patients >18 years old seen in the Stabilization Room that required intubation.

Study Design: Prospective

Anticipated Benefits: none

Potential Risks: Risks associated with intubation

Research Associate’s Role: data collection

Physician’s Role: none

Number of Patients Enrolled: 54 patients enrolled, n = 26 available for follow-up.

Results: Regression analysis showed no regression between BIS scores and patient recall of intubation.

Interpretation of Results / Affect on Clinical Practice: BIS monitoring is not useful in predicting if a patient receiving intubation in the ED is likely to recall the experience.
