There is no "right" way to consent a patient, but there is a set essential
elements that are contained in a "correct" or ethical consent. SC∆RE
is a mnemonic device for the 5 essential elements of an ethical consent.
The device is intended to help you remember those elements during your
conversation with a patient that you intend to enroll in a research project.
SC∆RE also happens to be a very useful order in which to discuss those
elements of the study with the patient. You may consent the patient in
any order you wish (5! = 120 possible combinations) but you will find that
most consents that do not begin with the study question do not go well. |
